Scale Warm-Ups

Every level of Sight-Read to Succeed includes a set of Scale Warm-Ups. Only scales that are listed in the criteria are utilized. These exercises include several forms of scales: Low Octave, High Octave, Both Octaves Together, Arpeggio Using Both Octaves, Scale in Thirds (both octaves), and a Short Chromatic Scale.

Levels 1 & 2 have a different set of exercises that include: Scales in 4/4, 3/4, & 2/4 meters, Scale with Meter Changes, Scale with Bow Lifts, One Octave Scale, One Octave Arpeggio, and a Scale with Ties & Bow Lifts

Sight-Reading Exercises Each level of Sight-Read to Succeed will include twenty-five sight-reading exercises. Several exercises include helpful "tip" boxes, repeat signs (including D.C./D.S. al Fine), codas, and 1st/2nd endings. Dynamics, bow lifts, tempo alterations, and articulations are also included in the exercises.

The exercises contain material that is listed on the "Criteria Pages". That means no surprises! All of the exercises are at least sixteen measures in length, and allows the director to reinforce the use of vibrato, dynamics, phrasing, 4th finger vibrato (for violin and viola), and more!

Below are different ways a director can utilize these exercises.

  • Directors can evaluate an individual or group of student's Sight-Reading ability.

  • The Director's Book includes a Table of Contents that lists tempo, meter and key signatures. Allowing the Director to choose exercises and target specific elements.

  • Directors can ask students to reflect on their sight-reading performance.
